34- MỸ NHÂN VÀ DANH TƯỚNG TRONG THẾ GIỚI VÀ TÂM THỨC CỦA DƯƠNG NHƯ NGUYỆN PDF Print E-mail

The bottom-line is, rest assured that a woman with so much at stake like me will not venture and say things without backup or a very solid theoretical basis on which to rest my choice.  My choice may come out in forms that may not readily be understood by the general Vietnamese public,  and yes, I will blunder as well (typos, slip of tongues and what not), but NOT when I used literary text or metaphors. Especially not when I speak literature, my cultural roots, or women’s rights.

In a very short interview, it is impossible to convey and expound the intellectual forces, themes, and symbolism that flash through my mind, at all levels, all dimensions. I know that I am not one-dimensional or LITERAL (I say literal, not literary).  So I welcome the opportunity to converse. Time limit is the only restriction.  Accordingly,  I am posting our dialogues on the web, although I do not consider myself a member or player of the web community.

In order to fully illustrate the application of the theory of interpretation [as I mentioned earlier, found in the constitutional interpretation of the legal profession (at the level far beyond the mundane practice of law) as well as by the philosophers of language (Foucault, Barthes) in the new discipline called “the philosophy of language”[, I have fully applied this theory of interpretation in my own creative writing. Below is a sample of it – a poem I wrote last year, 2004. I put in this poem (written in English) several quotes from Kieu and Ca Dao, used by me completely FREE OF the original intent although I still leaned on the images created by the words quoted.  Perhaps this will serve as an example of how I have taken theories and put them into practice.

I will leave the interpretation of this poem to readers, each one to form brand-new interpretation independent of what I mean.  AGAIN, as Barthes has indicated, WHEN THE LITERARY TEXT IS SPOKEN, THE AUTHOR IS DEEMED DEAD, AND GONE IS THE ORIGINAL INTENT. USE WHAT THE AUTHOR HAS PUT FORWARD AS A BRAND-NEW CREATION. WHEN THE AUTHOR IS DEAD AND HIS/HER INTENT IS GONE, THE READER IS BORN.  THE READER BECOMES THE CREATIVE ARTIST, TO FIT HIS/HER FRAME OF MIND.
